Field notes

Engineering ideas you can put to work.

Practical notes on cost, architecture, delivery, and the decisions that make systems easier to operate. Each one follows a single decision: what to measure, which assumption to question, and what a change costs to run.

Cloud & cost

A bigger bill is not always a bigger business.

One invoice holds demand, avoidable work and operating effort. Split the last increase before approving the next one.

Delivery & reliability

A deployment is ready when someone else can recover it.

A green pipeline is a beginning. Ownership, rollback, and a practical handover finish the job.

Cloud & cost

A growing cloud bill is a question, not a diagnosis.

Separate healthy growth from expensive work before you change the infrastructure.

Architecture

Choose the smallest system your team can operate.

Infrastructure maturity is an operating capability, not a count of tools.

How we write field notes

One decision, with its evidence.

Each note examines a single engineering decision: what was measured, what changed, and what is still unknown. Unfamiliar terms are explained, numbers are checked by an engineer before publication, and a note that revisits earlier work restates the result and its limits so it can be read on its own. Topics cover cloud cost, architecture, delivery, and reliability. If a note raises a question about your own system, send it to us with the context you have, and we will tell you what we would look at first.

What could work better?

Bring the bottleneck, the rising bill, or the release that takes too long. We’ll help you find a useful next step.
